Tanegashima Views Tanegashima has an uncountable collection of view spots both inland and along the coast. Sweeping panoramic views can be found everywhere, along with more focused views of specific points like caves and eroded rock formations, which nature has sculpted into beautiful monuments. The sunsets from the west coast of the island will definitely leave you speechless especially during Autumn when the sun sets behind neighboring Yakushima in the late afternoon.

Sunsets With Yakushima If you want something romantic to do on the island, a trip to the west coast to watch the sunset is a must. Towards late Summer and through Autumn the sun sets behind the island of Yakushima. Picture - Beautiful sunset behind Yakushima with sun rays shooting up to the clouds. Finding a day devoid of clouds surrounding Yakushima is difficult at best but once in awhile you get lucky. Even when the peaks of Yakushima are shrouded in clouds, the colors emanating from the sunset behind the island are striking. The following pictures were taken during the first few months after moving to the island. They were taken from the Nishino district in Minamitane Town on the west coast of the island. While there is a seemingly unlimited amount of spectacular views on the island, the sunsets over neighboring Yakushima are the most breathtaking. Pastels September 4, 2014 - Although not an incredibly striking sunset the pastel colors were still very beautiful. This was taken at 6:22 pm JST. High Clouds September 4, 2014 - This sunset reflected off the high clouds with a few low clouds adding to the beauty of this picture. This was taken at 6:27 pm. Already Set September 4, 2014 - The sun had already set but still sent off enough light to color the horizon. Picture was taken at 6:51 pm. Soft Colors September 9, 2014 - This sunset was not nearly as dramatic as other days but still provided a backdrop of soft colors. Sunset Behind Clouds Above Yakushima October 15, 2014 - I absolutely love this picture. The sun was behind some low clouds resulting in sun rays shining though to the ocean. Above these clouds were some middle clouds which were illuminated by the sunlight. Sun Rays From Behind Yakushima October 16, 2014 - Another favorite picture. The sun was already behind Yakushima and was producing beautiful sun rays which lit up the sky above the island. Pastel Picture October 17, 2014 - Pastels covered the sky above Yakushima and reflected off the ocean. Bright Glow From Behind Yakushima October 22, 2014 - This sequence of pictures came out really nice even considering they were taken with an iphone. The sun was already behind Yakushima and sending out sun rays and a beautiful yellow orange glow. This was taken at 5:24 pm JST. 6 Minutes Later October 22, 2014 - This was taken at 5:30 pm JST. Another 5 Minutes October 22, 2014 - This was taken at 5:35 pm JST. And Another 3 Minutes October 22, 2014 - This was taken at 5:38 pm JST. An Almost Cloudless Sky October 27, 2014 - This was an unusual sunset as the sky above Yakushima was almost cloudless aside from a few high clouds. The Stage Was Set October 29, 2014 - This was taken at 4:10 pm JST and it was obvious the stage was already set for an incredible sunset. If the clouds would only dissipate a little more. A Bright Glow October 29, 2014 - The sun began to create a bright glow around the peaks of Yakyshima at 5:22 pm. An airplane streaking across the sky added a nice condensation trail to the picture. Almost Same October 29, 2014 - This was taken at 5:24 and is pretty much the same as the previous picture sans the airplane. Best Picture October 29, 2014 - This is the best picture to date of the sun setting behind Yakushima. The setting sun illuminated the sky with a yellow glow with an orange outline along with a beautiful reflection on the ocean. This was taken at 5:37 pm. Almost Finished October 29, 2014 - At 5:41 the sunset for today was finishing up. Stormy Day November 2, 2014 - Today was cloudy and windy. Yakushima seemed to be enveloped in storm clouds. Beautiful Sunset November 4, 2014 - This was an unusual, almost cloudless sky above Yakushima. The sun was very bright seconds before it slipped behind the Yakushima mountains. Nice Sequence November 5, 2014 - This turned out to be a really nice sequence of sunset pictures showing the rays of the sun change their angle as the sun set behind the thick cloud bank. This was taken at 5:03 pm JST. More Angle November 5, 2014 - The angle of the rays shifted as the sun was setting. This was taken at 5:09 pm JST. Almost Finished November 5, 2014 - A small portion of the rays can still be seen in this picture seconds before the sun set behind Yakushima. This was taken at 5:10 pm JST. Nice Glow November 5, 2014 - The sun provided a nice glow from behind the mountains. This was taken at 5:11 pm JST. Nice Sunset November 7, 2014 - The sun was barely able to find a hole in the clouds today. Striking Colors November 7, 2014 - This picture definitely does not do this sunset justice. The colors were really amazing and not picked up well enough by the camera. Really Unusual Sunset November 15, 2014 - Yakushima is pretty much covered in clouds most of the year. Although you can usually see the sunset through spaces in the clouds, a cloudless day is very rare. Today was one of those days and the sunset was absolutely gorgeous. A Glowing Sunset November 15, 2014 - The glowing sunset from behind the mountains of Yakushima was beautiful. Yakushima Sunrise November 23, 2014 - This was actually a sunrise which partially illuminated Yakushima. This picture is not as incredible as the actual view. Storm Clouds November 30, 2014 - This was a really stormy day on Tanegashima and apparently on Yakushima as well. The storm clouds dispersed for a few minutes showing only the base of the mountains. Beautiful Yakushima Mountain Tops December 15, 2014 - This was an unusual day where the mountain tops of Yakushima were not shrouded in thick clouds. And then with a closer look, snow could be seen on the highest peaks. The Snow Covered Peaks December 15, 2014 - This picture was taken from the rock beach adjacent to Minamitane west coast fishing pier number 6. The blue sky and the wispy high cirrus clouds provided a beautiful backdrop for this Yakushima scene. Yakushima Mountains Close Up December 15, 2014 - A close up picture of Yakushima finally revealed the snow covered peaks. Glowing Sunset December 18, 2014 - This is the only time of the year when you can see the sun actually set to the south of Yakushima from the Nishino district in Minamitane town. Then in about a week the sun will begin to trek back to the north side of the island. This was taken at 5:09 pm JST. Rock Frame December 18, 2014 - A couple of rocks along the coast provided a beautiful frame for the sunset today. This was taken at 5:10 pm JST. Getting Brighter December 18, 2014 - The sun continued to get brighter as it illuminated the clouds. This was taken at 5:11 pm JST. Almost Finished December 18, 2014 - The glow of the sun faded within minutes of this picture. This was taken at 5:12 pm JST.
